Innovative ways of teaching and learning are on the minds of institutions and corporations as they attempt to educate their constituents. Moodle™, an open source learning management system (LMS), easily enhances teaching and learning by helping institutions and organizations collaborate and communicate online, conduct online courses, accommodate multiple learning styles, and much more. Designed to support a social constructionist framework of education, Moodle can serve as the collaborative LMS for the enterprise.

What is Moodle?

Moodle is a software package for producing Internet-based courses and web sites, with standards-based APIs for integration. Moodle is an Open Source Course Management System (CMS), also known as a Learning Management System (LMS) or a Virtual Learning Environment (VLE). It has become very popular among educators around the world as a tool for creating online dynamic web sites for their students. To work, it needs to be installed on a web server somewhere, either on a local computer or one at a Web hosting company.

History of Moodle

The word Moodle was originally an acronym for Modular Object-Oriented Dynamic Learning Environment, which is mostly useful to programmers and education theorists. It's also a verb that describes the process of lazily meandering through something, doing things as it occurs to you to do them, an enjoyable tinkering that often leads to insight and creativity. As such it applies both to the way Moodle was developed, and to the way a student or teacher might approach studying or teaching an online course.
